RemitFlow
A mobile-first cross-border remittance platform enabling Indian expatriates in the UAE to send money home in under 15 minutes using UPI, with transparent low-cost pricing.
Context
The UAE–India corridor is the largest remittance channel in the world, processing over $18 billion annually. More than 3.5 million Indian expatriates in the UAE depend on remittance services to support their families’ daily needs, medical expenses, and education.
Despite the scale of this corridor, existing remittance options are dominated by traditional money transfer operators and banks that charge high fees, rely on legacy infrastructure, and take 24–48 hours to settle transactions.
For blue-collar and mobile-only users in particular, these delays and hidden costs create financial stress and erode trust in formal remittance systems.
The Problem
Indian expatriates in the UAE faced difficulty sending money home quickly, affordably, and with confidence.
Key challenges included:
- •Long settlement times due to legacy banking rails
- •Unclear fee structures and FX rates
- •Limited visibility into transaction status
- •High cognitive load during repeat transfers
Solution
RemitFlow was designed as a mobile-first cross-border remittance platform focused on speed, clarity, and trust.
The solution emphasized:
- •Clear fee and FX disclosures before confirmation
- •Simplified recipient setup for repeat use
- •Real-time status tracking across transfer stages
Rather than introducing new financial instruments, the product focused on improving the end-to-end experience around existing rails.
Strategy
The strategy centered on reducing uncertainty rather than maximizing feature breadth.
Instead of competing on the lowest possible fees, the product prioritized:
- •Predictability of outcomes
- •Transparency at decision points
- •Ease of repeat usage
This acknowledged that in remittances, user confidence often outweighs marginal cost savings.
What I Learned
- Trust is a core product feature in financial services
- Transparency reduces both user anxiety and operational load
- Simpler flows outperform feature-rich ones in repeat-use scenarios
- Predictability is often more valuable than speed alone

Strategic Reflection & Next Iteration
Key Assumptions Made
- •Transparency drives trust more effectively than price competition
- •Most remittance users value consistency over novelty
- •Reducing cognitive load increases repeat usage
- •Clear status visibility reduces support inquiries
Major Product Trade-offs
- •Prioritize clarity over advanced financial features — Slower differentiation compared to feature-heavy competitors
- •Optimize for repeat users rather than first-time promotions — Lower short-term acquisition incentives
- •Keep compliance flows explicit rather than hidden — Slightly longer onboarding in exchange for trust
